Judy-Mowatt-for-article

Judy Mowatt OD, born 1952 is a Jamaican reggae artist who rose to fame as part of the trio the I Threes, the backing vocalists for Bob Marley & the Wailers. Born Judith Veronica Mowatt in Gordon Town, St. Andrew Parish, Jamaica, Mowatt was associated with Bunny Wailer in the early 70s and wrote some of the tracks he recorded. In 1974, she got her big break by joining Bob Marley’s backing vocal trio, the I Threes. One-third of the I-Threes, reggae’s most influential female vocal trio, Judy Mowatt helped to turn the last recordings of Bob Marley into enduring classics. Her Black Woman album (1980) is considered by many critics to be the greatest reggae album by a female artiste. It was also the first reggae album recorded by a woman acting as her own producer. She became the first female singer nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of reggae music when her Working Wonders album was nominated in 1985. Formerly a member of the Rastafari movement, in the late 90s she converted to Christianity and now sings Gospel music. In 1999 the Jamaican government made her an Officer of the Order of Distinction for ‘services to music’.

BOYO HAMMOND – Reggae Singer

BOYO HAMMOND – Reggae Singer

Boyo is undoubtedly one of the most versatile singers to come out of Jamaica. Currently working under the musical direction of The Wiz Orville Malcolm at Kornerstone Studios, Boyo Hammond is putting on the finishing touches to his brand new album, appropriately named, “Winner” This album is, by any standard, one of the best reggae performances to come out of Canada.  Laced with pulsating dance-hall baselines, Boyo Hammond captivates with magical renditions of classics such as Nat King Cole’s “Unforgettable” and “The Very Thought Of You”, plus the title song, “Winner” written by Boyo and done in collaboration with his brother Beres Hammond, in the midst of other great originals written by Boyo. Boyo Hammond is also the father of the very talented Lenn and Junior Hammond. Album drops in November 2014.

DONNA MAKEDA IS CANADIAN REGGAE ROYALTY! (By Natalie White of Buzz Editorial, JA)

Donna Makeda, internationally renowned as Canada’s Reggae Empress, started singing and performing as a child and is still going strong. Rooted and grounded as a Rastafarian and of Guyanese descent, she graduated from Trebas Institute with a diploma in Recorded Music Production. She went on to publish her own reggae magazine called ReggaeXclusive Entertainment News. Her accolades and awards are numerous and include the Consul General’s Award of Guyana and the Female Dancehall DJ of The Year at the 20th Canadian Reggae Music Awards. Other awards includes Top Reggae Newcomer 1993, Top Reggae Dancehall DJ (female) 1995, 1996, 1999, 2003, 2004 and Top Reggae Music Video for Jah Great Woman in 1995 just to name a few. Donna released extensive singles and albums; “Who Can Endure” “Jah Ah De Rulah” which includes songs like Come Into My Life featuring Prince Everald, Make Love, Not War featuring Roger B and In My House featuring Negus Morris of the Heptones. The video of Jah Great Woman can be seen on Much Music and propelled her on to the global stage in areas such as the Caribbean, North America and Europe that subsequently got her signed to a licensing deal with Amiata Records in Italy for the remix of Life Story. Her deep involvement in stage plays landed her the lead role in a Documentary film titled Roots Daughters alongside Judy Mowatt. Her appearance and opening acts for internationally renowned artistes such as Capleton, Coco Tea, Marcia Griffiths, Sister Carol, Culture, Beres Hammond, Buju Banton, Michael Rose, Cutty Ranks and Louie Culture have shown her up in so many places like Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Calgary, internationally in Barbados, Guyana, New York and Jamaica. Donna is now leaving her mark here on the island in the Cash Global Records Commercial on CVM TV alongside Beenie man and Rich Kid. She was loved by the audience on stage with tunes from said Label Gwehnazi feat. Chatta, and Badmind feat. King Ujah from the Cash Global HQ. The soon to be released Things Ain’t Always What It Seems on the Mad Run Riddim is in the selected list of tunes to be lead songs and video single, it is arguably the best tune up to date Donna has done. We were pleased to have Mr. Williams of Cash Global Records on “The Buzz” giving an in-depth level of information about the upcoming tour, the release and its artistes including Donna, he was very dogmatic to say “Donna Makeda is undoubtedly the Canadian Empress of Reggae Music Royalty, there isn’t one person or entity in the Canadian reggae fraternity that she hasn’t impacted somehow or another and that is her legacy.” So we anticipate the release of the single and the appearance of Empress Donna Makeda.

Roots Reggae Singer JAH 9 CHANNEL 1 CLASSIC SONG

Roots Reggae Singer JAH 9 CHANNEL 1 CLASSIC SONG

AG Select PR, Kingston – With her latest single “Steamers a Bubble”, rising roots-reggae singer Jah9 (Janine Cunningham) has added lyrical fire to the Apartment riddim, a Channel One classic- originally recorded in 1982. The instrumental featured the original Roots Radics band with Lincoln ‘Style Rotterdam’ Scott on drums, Errol ‘Flabba’ Holt on bass, Eric ‘Bingy Bunny’ Lamont on guitar and Wycliffe ‘Steelie’ Johnson (of Steelie and Cleevie) on keyboards. The song’s producer Franklyn ‘Ben-Up’ Irving (Shamala/Hit Bound Records) served as percussionist and chief curator of sorts as the instrumental went unreleased for almost 30 years till its 2010 reincarnation as the Inna De Yard Riddim on the song of same name. That single was recorded by Deraja featuring Paquito via the Maka Fresh label.   In explaining the long gap between the track’s creation and re-launch, Franklyn says that his reluctance to release it was influenced by prior disappointments in the industry. “In 1982, my first production, “Robbery” by O’Neal Dyer, was released in the UK under the ChaCha label. I never heard from ChaCha about anything regarding the song and that threw me off so I left music to pursue other ventures. A conversation with Earl “Chinna” Smith in 2009 led me to restore the track and after converting the format we then recorded Derajah’s song in 2010. I knew I wanted a woman on the riddim and after hearing Jah9 I felt it was perfect for her.”   Jah9’s vocals were recorded by Rory Gilligan of Stone Love and mixed in the UK by Mark Gamble, who also created the dubstep version. With its exclusive vinyl release, ‘Steamers’ will introduce the classic sounds to a new generation of reggae lovers.  Still, ardent roots reggae fans will welcome the pairing of the Roots Radics’s easy rockers flow with that of Jah9’s jazz on dub sensibilities.  Inspired by visits to Chinna’s St. Andrew Park home which is as legendary as the gifted guitar Melchizedek himself, the song paints a picture of a typical visit to Inna De Yard. Jah9, who released her debut album New Name in May, will be promoting the song as she makes her way across Europe in the coming months. Steamers a Bubble will also be featured on Channel One’s upcoming special commemorative release celebrating some forty years in the business.   Founded in 1973 by the legendary Hoo Kim brothers, the Maxfield Avenue based studio was the starting point for many greats like Sly and Robbie. In its formative years Channel One recorded some of the biggest tracks in reggae history, churning out hits from The Mighty Diamonds (“I Need a Roof”) and Delroy Wilson (“It’s a Shame”) among others. This studio is largely considered one of Jamaica’s most successful, for its longevity as well as the solid string of hits that it spawned between 1983 and 1993 alone.  Steamers a Bubble promises to be a timeless anthem for chalice blazers and roots reggae lovers alike.
